Occupation by Pakistan

The prime minister of Pakistan and India met at a conference where the Lahore summit in 1999 took place.

According to various reports, it is considered that Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee discussed the matter related to the Kargil sector.

This conference created tension between two neighbouring nations that already existed since 1998.

After this Lahore summit in 1999, Pakistani intruders occupied the Indian side of LOC. The foremost reason concerning this intrusion was to bring forward the issue of Kashmir and its people.

One important reason for this intrusion was to become dependent on the gaps that existed between both sides of LOC.

The detailed plan of this intrusion was done by Gen Pervez Musharraf and Lt. Gen Mohammed Aziz, the Chief of staff. At the time of intrusion, the Kargil sector was fully covered without chilly snow and there were very few roads connecting to LOC.

Zoji la was the only mountain pass that connects Kargil and Kashmir valley that opened by the first week of June. The Pakistani intruders made a very effective plan.

They also knew that even after the Indian army detected their intrusion; it would take quite a long time to decide the plan of action. They didn’t create any new base for the plan to maximize deception. All the plans were to be executed on the existing base.

All the plans were put into action by the start of May. The Pakistani intruders were divided into small groups of 30-40, each carrying out different assigned tasks along the lines of the ridge.

The Pakistani intruders wanted to occupy the upper part of Kashmir and start the spectre of nuclear power.

Indian Army detected intruders

In the brief history of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the foremost reason behind the Kargil War was the unauthorized entry of Pakistani intruders on the LOC site, which belongs to India.

Usually, because of the frosty winter in Kashmir, both the Indian and Pakistan armies occupy the Kargil sector later in spring. But it was strange in May 1999. The Pakistani army dressed as Kashmiri rebels illegally invaded the Indian side of LOC earlier than the listed time.

Special Pakistani forces and 4 to 5 troops of Northern Light infantry occupied and set up their base on the Indian side of LOC. Originally, the interference of Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector was not recognized by the Indian army.

The Indian army affirmed it would take 3-4 days to expel the intruders but later realized that the intrusion was bigger than expected. More than 2600km was occupied by Pakistani intruders.

The intruders were very well armed with the most advanced and powerful weapons, including AK-47s, artillery, and Stinger Missiles.

The main intention of Operation Vijay was to clear the Kargil sector and free the Indian side of LOC from Pakistani intruders. The Indian army detected the Pakistani intrusion, and they planned to attack Pakistani-occupied bases.

In May 1999, Operation Vijay came into effect to evict the Northern Light Infantry (NLI) soldiers of Pakistan. NLI occupied the high-terrain region and the ridgelines.

Soon it was realized that huge powerful equipment would be needed to suppress the Pakistani intruders and then the firepower began.

The first ridgeline captured on 13th June was Tololing in the Drass sub-sector. This War included thousands of bombs, high power missiles, and rocket launchers which weakened the enemy to interfere more.

The gun used in the firing was the 155 mm Bofors medium guns and 105 mm Indian field guns that destroyed all visible Pakistani troops and made them evict various positions.

It was stated that around 12000 rounds of explosives were thrown down in the Tiger hills, causing high devastation. The high terrain in the Batalik Sector was reoccupied after continuously fighting day and night.

Artillery played an important role in devastating Pakistani intruder pieces of equipment and recapturing point 5203 on 21st June 1999.

 2. Air Operation

In the brief history of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Indian Air Force played a major role in the Kargil war and supported the ground army from 11 May to 25 May.

Operation Safed Sagar was the term given to the Air operation and the Air force carried around more than 5000 sorties.

Indian Air Force states that they flew more than 500 sorties in the Kargil sector. It was also claimed that more than 80 sorties were close to the target.

The terrain in the Indian side of LOC is more than 18000 feet above the Sky and all the commanders were instructed to fly over 21000 feet.

At this height, the air density is generally very low. This is the main reason that heavy-weight items are restricted, as the radius is more than the ground level. Under such high air pressure, the engine of the fighter plane also deteriorates.

Hence this causes improper firing because of lack of visibility from such a high range.
