On 21st January 2023, one of the mass shootings in modern US history took place on Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California. At the dance hall, a gunman killed 10 people and another 10 were injured before he attempted to attack second dance hall.
Police has stated that they have found the suspect the very next day who committed suicide and died. The shooting holds the unfortunate but familiar shootout and joins the list of deadliest mass shootings in the US history.
A non-profit organisation, The Gun Violence Archives track the shootings in US and counted almost 647 mass shootings in 2022. As per the organisation definition mass shooting as incidence in which at least four people die excluding the gunman. Here is a list of:

1. Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2017
Dead: 58 people
Injured: More than 850 people
A gunman fired at people attending the Route 91 Harvest festival. He fired from his 32nd floor room at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The rampage continued for almost 15 mins. The crowd tried to take cover. The gunman committed suicide before SWAT unit reached his room.

2. Orlando, Florida, at the Pulse nightclub in 2016
Dead: 49 people
Injured: At least 50 people
In 2016, a deadliest mass shooting in US history took place at Pulse Nightclub. The club was hosting “Latin Night”. During the shootout, the gunman called police and confirm the alliance to ISIS though no evidence of communication between the gunman and terrorist group.

3. Blacksburg, Virginia, at Virginia Tech University in 2007
Dead: 32 people
Injured: 23 people
One of the deadliest school shootings in US history is 2007 Virginia Tech University campus massacre. A senior at the school was the gunman instructed two separate attacks before he killed himself.

4. Newton, Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012
Dead: 27 people
Injured: 2 people
The people killed were students aged between 6 and 7 years along with some teachers. The gunman killed his mother brutally before he left for the school and died by suicide as soon as first responders reached the school.

5. Sutherland Springs, TX: First Baptist Church in 2017
Dead: 26 people
Injured: 22 people
The gunman was wearing a tactical gear. He used a semiautomatic rifle to fire the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The people who died ranged between the age group of 18 months to 72 years. After a brief car crash the gunman was found dead.

6. Killeen, TX: Luby’s Cafeteria in 1991
Dead: 23 people
Injured: 27 people
The gunman used gun pickup truck to bash through the glass front window of the restaurant. He began shooting on people and staff using his semi-automatic gun.

7. El Paso, TX: Walmart in 2019
Dead: 23 people
Injured: 23 people
The gunman lived almost 650 miles away from the Walmart, Le Paso. He had posted a racist and anti-immigrant manifesto on 8chan which is an online message board.
The message flashed just 20 mins before the attack and it was about “Hispanic invasion of Texas,” and turning Texas into a “Democrat stronghold.”

8. San Ysidro, CA: McDonald’s in 1984
Dead: 21 people
Injured: 19 people
The gunman was a 41-year-old person who opened fire at McDonald’s restaurant. The gunman was shot by SWAT of San Diego by a sniper from nearby roof. Only after the shot, the rampage was stopped. This incidence prompted changes in response to mass – shooter scenarios.

9. Uvalde, TX: Robb Elementary School in 2022
Dead: 21 people
Injured: At least 15 people
The gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. It killed children and staff. The 18-year-old gunman, a student at Uvalde High School was shot dead.

10. Austin, TX: The University of Texas in 1966
Dead: 16 people
Injured: 31 people
The gunman was a military trained snipper who shot people from observatory deck of the main building of University of Texas. With the help of students, police attempted to pick off the shooter from the ground. The local police officer fatally shot the gunman. This spurred to create a SWAT Team.

11. Parkland, FL: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018
Dead: 17 people
Injured: 17 people
The shooter was a 19-year-old student armed with AR-15. The victims included students as well as adults. “It’s a horrific situation. It’s just a horrible day for us,” Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. “It’s a day that you pray every day that you get up that you will never have to see.
It is in front of us, and I ask the community for your prayers, your support for these children and these families.”

12. Fort Hood, TX: Fort Hood Army Base in 2009
Dead: 13 people
Injured: 32 people
The gunman was a US Army major and a psychiatrist. He opened fired at Ford Hood army base near Killeen, Texas. The gunman was paralysed from waist down to end the shooting.

13. San Bernardino, CA: Inland Regional Centre in 2015
Dead: 14
Injured: Two dozen
Farook, health inspector, and his wife opened fire at Inland Regional Centre. The couple had also planted homemade pipe bombs. The police managed to kill the couple after they fled the scene.

14. Edmond, OK: Edmond Post Office in 1986
Dead: 14 people
Injured: 6 people
The gunman was a part time mail carrier. He opened fire at US Post Office. The shooting end only after the gunman shot himself in his head. This was the first bead of the homicides by postman.

Injured: 24 people
The gunman entered the school and started shoot out before they killed themselves. This incidence changed the school across the country as well as the law enforcement.

Injured: Four people
The gunman entered American Civic Association Centre in a body armour. The gunman was 41-year-old and took classes in the centre. The shoot out was probably because of loss of job.

The shooter was a WWII vet who opened fire in neighbourhood. He was arrested and confessed the crime.

Injured: One people
The shooter killed his own children and others. He was also convicted for first degree murder charges. He was subsequently given death penalty though he was ruled to be incompetent to die.

The person who survived the attack testified against the suspects. Based on which three men were arrested.

20. Aurora CO: Century 16 movie theatre in 2012

Injured: 70 people
An armed man opened fire at the midnight which aired “The Dark Knight Rises” in a movie theatre. The shooter exploded smoke bombs and opened fire at the crowd. The shooter was later arrested and sentenced to life.

21. Thousand Oaks, CA: Borderline Bar and Grill in 2018

Injured: 16 people
The shooter was a 28-year-old employee of Marine Corps veteran and held a legally purchased gun. He opened fire at the security guard and several employees followed by firing inside the bar when almost 130 to 180 people were present in the bar. He killed himself after killing deputy sheriff.

22. Washington, DC: Washington Navy Yard in 2013
Dead: 12 people
Injured: 8 people
The 34 – year old shooter was identified as ex US sailor and Navy civilian contractor. He opened fire at the headquarters of Naval Sea Systems Command.
“In the aftermath of the incident, the members of MPD first and foremost want to remember and honour the twelve people who lost their lives,” the DC Metropolitan Police Department said in a 2014 after-action report. “Twelve people went to work that Monday but did not return home to their loved ones.”

23. Virginia Beach, Virginia: Municipal Centre in 2019
Dead: 12 people
Injured: 4 people
The gunman was a 40-year-old public utility employee who opened fire on multiple levels of municipal centre. He had worked at that place for almost 15 years. He used semi-automatic pistol with sound suppressor to open fire. He was shot dead at the scene.

24. Pittsburgh, PA: Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018
Dead: 11 people
Injured: 6 people
The gunman was a 46-year-old truck driver who was armed with assault rifle and three handguns. He entered the Tree of Life synagogue. The gunman said that “all jews need to die” when he was caught by the police.

25. Hamilton, OH in 1975
Dead: 11 people
Injured: 0 people
The man opened fire on “Easter Sunday” and shot people. Most of his victim were his family members. The gunman was convicted on two counts of murder.

26. Sante Fe, TX: Santa Fe High School in 2018
Dead: 10 people
Injured: 13 people
The 17-year-old shooter was charged with capital murder for opening fire at high school in Texas. The shooter had used a .38 calibre revolver and shotgun to attack and later suicide. He legally owned both the guns.
He had also planted pipe bombs. The police found Molotov cocktail at his residence.

27. Monterey Park, CA in 2023

The shooter entered the dance hall where the people had gathered for celebration of Lunar New Year. After the first hall, he tried to shoot another hall but was disarmed by a partygoer. The SWAT team found the cargo van, but he was found dead by suicide.

28. Geneva County, AL in 2009

Injured: 6 people
The 28-year-old shooter killed people in the county. The victims were his family members. “He was going to go until he was stopped, by himself or someone else,” Col. Chris Murphy of the Alabama Department of Public Safety said at the time, per the outlet.

The 18-year-old white shooter travelled to a neighbourhood which predominantly Black people, and opened fire at local market. The man dressed in tactical gear. He also live streamed the incident. He was charged with first degree murder.

30. Boulder, CO: King Soopers Supermarket in 2021
Dead: 10 people
Injured: 1 people
The gunman was a 22-year-old Colorado man. He opened fire at King Soopers grocery store in Boulder last year. In April as per the local news channel, the man was ruled incompetent to stand trial.
