What is the Coronation

The bookish definition of coronation is the act or occasion of crowning. The archbishop physically places the crown on the head of the monarch.

Coronet is a symbolic and religious ceremony. In the United Kingdom, the coronation is the monarch’s rule as head of the Church of England.

It also marks the transfer of their power and title. King Charles III immediately acceded to the throne after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, but the coronation was an official moment to be crowned as king.

When and where is King Charles’s coronation?

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation occurred on the 6th of May 2023. The ceremony was held at Abbey Church of Westminster. Buckingham Palace shared the invite to the coronation.

This invite is full of hidden symbolism. The service began at 11 a.m. local time / 6 a.m. Eastern time / 3 a.m. Pacific time.

What is the schedule for King Charles’s coronation?

The Cross of Wales will lead the procession. The procession will include fragments of a “True Cross” relic, which was gifted to King Charles as a coronation gift by Pope Francis. The service has six main vital elements, and the Archbishop of Canterbury conducts it. 

1] Recognition: King Charles would stand beside the Coronation Chair. The Archbishops of Canterbury would present him with congregants who would shout, “God Save King Charles”.

2] Oath: King Charles swore to uphold the Church of England and gave affirmative answers to the questions of the Archbishop of Canterbury and was followed by an oath that King Charles needed to repeat “I Charles do solemnly and sincerely in the presence of God profess, testify, and declare that I am a faithful Protestant, and that I will, according to the true intent of the enactments which secure the Protestant succession to the Throne, uphold and maintain the said enactments to the best of my powers according to law.”

3] Anointing: Earlier in the year, the Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem consecrated the oil at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. King Charles removed his ceremonial robe and sat on the chair while the Archbishop of Canterbury anointed him with holy oil. After King Charles, Queen Camilla was anointed.

4] Investiture and Crowning: King Charles will be presented with two sceptres viz The Sovereign’s Sceptre with Dove, which represents his spiritual role, and the other, The Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, which represents his temporal power and good governance and an Orb which represents religious and moral authority. The coronation ring was placed on Charles’s right hand. The archbishop places St. Edwards’s Crown on King Charles’s head after being presented with all his regalia.

5] Enthroning: The Archbishop said, “Stand firm, and hold fast from henceforth this seat of royal dignity, which is yours by the authority of Almighty God. May that same God, whose throne endures forever, establish your throne in righteousness, that it may stand fast for evermore.”

6] Homage: Charles’s coronation, began with a homage from the Church, followed by the homage of royal blood performed by his son, Prince William and then the homage of the people where whoever wanted to can participate.

During the service, twelve new compositions were performed, which included music by Judith Weir, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Patrick Doyle. Performers at the service include the Coronation Orchestra, the royal harpist Alis Huws, the Westminster Abbey Choir, the Ascension Choir, and more.

Who pays the price for the king’s coronation cost?

Since this is a state occasion, the government of the UK shall pay for the coronation. However, as per the BBC, “While it is likely to come under pressure to show sensitivity during the current cost-of-living crisis, the government is expected to use the ceremony as an important diplomatic opportunity to present the UK to the world.”

What will be different from the last king`s coronation?

The coronation will be much smaller as compared to the last coronation.

Who can participate in the King Charles coronation?

Representatives of charities supported by King Charles and Queen Camilla are invited. In April, Buckingham Palace shared that 850 community and charity representatives would attend, which includes more than 450 recipients of the British Empire Medal (BEM).

The Abbey will be at total capacity, which was around 2,000 guests. In addition to the British royal family, the guests included Camilla’s family, including her children, grandchildren, and other close family members.

In addition to being sovereign of the United Kingdom and 15 Commonwealth realms, Charles is also the head of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of 54 independent countries.

The responses of other commonwealth realms were mixed for the coronation of the kind of Charles. The majority of commonwealth realms say that they are least interested in the King’s coronation.

The soldiers carrying flags of Bahamas, Tuvalu, and South Africa, will march alongside British troops. Some Commonwealth realms have removed the British monarch as its head of state. The head of the British monarchy is replaced by an elected leader.
