Jabs At Each Other on Apple vs Facebook Data Privacy

“A frustration I have is that a lot of people increasingly seem to equate an advertising business model with somehow being out of alignment with your customers,” is what Mark Zuckerberg quoted. “I think it’s the most ridiculous concept.

What, you think because you’re paying Apple you’re somehow in alignment with them? If you were in alignment with them, then they’d make their products a lot cheaper.”

While Cook though didn’t state it clearly but was targeting Facebook when he stated that:

“Every Day, Billions of Dollars Change Hands. Countless Decisions Are Made based on Our Likes And Dislikes, Our Friends And Families, Our Relationships And Conversations.

Our Wishes and Fears, Our Hopes and Dreams. These Scraps Of Data, Each One Harmless Enough On Its Own, Are Carefully Assembled, Synthesized, Traded And Sold.”

The speech was just one part of the word war between Cook and Zuckerberg.

This war has been almost a decade old right from the birth of the iPhone, and it is mainly about the quest for control over the next wave of computing. These giants are collecting tons of personal data which they would sell to the advertisers to give away advertisements on your feed.

This is what they would call target marketing. This fight is to be at the top as the advertising-dependent of the internet is going to work in the years ahead.

Beginning of the Clash of Apple vs Facebook Data Privacy

Apple vs Facebook Privacy: The fight started when Apple decided to go live with an App Tracking Transparency feature which is built into Apple’s iOS 14 operating system. The data gathering can happen on two principles one is opt in other is opt out.

This feature would restrain the ability of Facebook to gather data about users, which they would in turn use for targeted advertising.

It is also said that the revenue generated by Facebook mainly comes from this targeted marketing which is also the only major revenue generation for Facebook.

In the opt principle, you need to give your consent for sending your data or collecting your data. You can allow data gathering, but then you will have to give your consent for the same.

Otherwise, App Tracking Transparency will block targeted data gathering. This is the principle which Apple has introduced in iOS 14.

While the other principle which is opt-out collects your data until you remove the consent. Facebook uses this method of opt-out to collect its user’s data.

Many of you may not even know the settings of the opt-out option. Even if you have logged out from your app, Facebook will track your activity and physical movement.

Now, this is completely your choice as the user to know which is better: opt-in or opt-out.

Why the Word War Between Apple vs Facebook Data Privacy

Apple vs Facebook Privacy: Facebook and Apple have come to a world war stage because of a difference in core business processes. This has arisen from the fundamental difference in opinion on how the internet should be used for making money.

Facebook says that the internet is a wild nest. It says there are a variety of platforms that can offer a different kind of services for free. As such, you would not pay for these services directly.

But you pay for them by allowing your data to be shared and giving you the advertisements right in front of you. Facebook calls this target marketing. It also says that it is for the small-scale companies for their growth.

On the other hand, Apple says that the internet is just an extension of the personal computer the way it was used back in 1980. Your phone, which has connectivity to the world, is the most personal device you can have.

Apple goes ahead and says that companies should reveal their plans about sharing your personal information even before it is shared.

Law for Sharing Data and Apple vs Facebook Data Privacy

Apple vs Facebook Privacy: There are no federal laws about data privacy policy. You as a consumer need to keep the hope that these companies will use the data responsibly without exploiting it.

That may seem unreasonable, considering that data-led advertising helps underwrite many of the free services consumers enjoy today, like email and web surfing.

But Facebook and Google are also enormously profitable and can afford a modest impact on advertising sales.

Fixing of the Issue Between Apple vs Facebook Privacy

Apple vs Facebook Privacy: “Consumer choice is what we’re for, which is why we built prominent in-app controls,” a Facebook spokeswoman said.

But that argument doesn’t quite pass the test. Most consumers don’t make the effort to switch off data collection controls in their apps. It means that it is defaulted into it.

While Apple’s proposed fix is not a panacea, it would be a step in the right direction. If users want to provide more of their data to app makers, they can make that choice.

They are also looking for applications that would notify you if any of the applications are tracking your data and storing the same.

Now we do not know which is right, or which is wrong. You as a user need to decide about this. But certainly, one thing is for sure your data holds exorbitantly high value. Otherwise, why would two big giants of the US lock horns for the huge data collected?

The question will always remain. While going online should you hold the right to privacy of your data or once you go online, the app provide hold all the rights for your data to be used?

Also, it is also you to decide which is ethical practice and which is not, or both are right to their place.
