Gautam Adani was in Ahmedabad, Gujrat, on 24 June 1962. He was born in a Jain family to Shantilal and Shanti Adani and has seven siblings.

In 1978, as a teenager, Adani went to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. He worked for Mahendra Brother for two or three years and then established his diamond brokerage firm in Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai.

In 1996, Adani founded Adani Power Limited, which was the earlier power business arm of Adani Group. As of date, Adani Power has thermal power plants with a capacity of 4620 MW.
