How Did Dalgona Coffee Go Viral?

Well, the story of dalgona coffee going viral finds its roots in South Korea. It was South Korean actor Jung Il-woo who made it popular.

Jung Il-woo, at Macau, ordered a whipped coffee at Stars’ Top Recipe at the Fun-Stauran show, and he felt that the taste of whipped coffee resembled that of Dalgona, which is a South Korean honeycomb or sponge toffee.

This South Korean honeycomb or sponge toffee was sugary, light, bright, and sponge-like textured.

Jung Il-woo shared the homemade coffee with the hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge.

The Korean YouTubers kickstarted the #dalgonacoffeechallenge and with the tik-tokers, Instagram bloggers, and chefs taking it up too, dalgona coffee didn’t take long to be giving its attendance on every Instagram profile.

History of Dalgona Coffee 

The fancy dalgona coffee’s history heads back to and white times of the 1950s. After the Korean War, parents of little ones who were looking for an alternative to expensive sweets discovered dalgona.

They heated sugar and water and then added baking soda to it. It turned out into a candy, on cooling, and thus dalgona toffees and candies were born.

How to Make Dalgona Coffee Step by Step? 

Did you know that, to make this world-famous drink, all you need is four very basic ingredients and very little time?

So, here’s the recipe.

Ingredients required:

  1. Two teaspoons of instant coffee powder
  2. 2 teaspoons of sugar
  3. Two teaspoons of water
  4. Two teaspoons of milk

Instructions:

  1. Add equal amounts of instant coffee powder, sugar, and water to your mixing bowl.
  2. Tilt the bowl a little and start whisking the ingredients, the dark and thin coffee turns lighter and thicker as you progress. Whisk it, with an electric or mechanical whisk, till it turns into a light, thick frothy foam.
  3. If you do not have a whisk, you may use a spoon and stir the ingredients vigorously. It’s just that it’s easier with a whisk, while it takes more time and energy with a spoon.
  4. Choose a mug or glass of your choice, pour milk into it up to three-fourths, add ice if you want to, and transfer the foam onto it. You may be skeptical about the foam floating over if you are doing it for the first time, but go ahead and pour it.
  5. And there you go, that’s your Dalgona Coffee.

Variations of Dalgona

Here is a list of some innovative variations of dalgona coffee that you may want to try: 

1. Spicy Dalgona Coffee

Ingredients:

  1. One teaspoon of instant coffee powder
  2. Two teaspoons of sugar
  3. Two teaspoons of water
  4. One glass of milk 
  5. 1 clove (lavang)
  6. One black pepper
  7. 1 cardamom (elaichi)
  8. 1 cinnamon stick (small)

Instructions:

  1. Take a bowl; add half a cup of water and the spices – clove, black pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon stick into it.
  2. Heat the water till it is reduced to two teaspoons.
  3. Filter out the spices and take the clear spiced water.
  4. Add two teaspoons of spiced water, two teaspoons of coffee, and two teaspoons of sugar to a bowl and whisk them vigorously until the frothy frost is formed. You may add a few drops of milk to enhance the frost.
  5. Pour milk into a mug till ¾ the and pour the frost over it.
  6. And Tadaaa! There’s your Spiced Dalgona Coffee.

2. Whipped Dalgona Chocolate Coffee

To make whipped dalgona chocolate, just replace the instant coffee powder with cocoa powder. You may even add a few drops or replace half the water with milk to enhance the foam.

3. Dalgona Vanilla Coffee

To make dalgona vanilla, take equal amounts of sugar and water, add half the amount of instant coffee powder replace the rest half with vanilla powder, and whisk or stir it vigorously till the frothy foam is formed.
