Indian Medalist at Tokyo Olympics 2020 for India | Medal India won in Tokyo Olympics 2020

Tokyo Olympics has been a proud moment for every Indian as the Indian medal tally has jumped the level. Indian medalist at Tokyo Olympics 2020 for India did a remarkable job. The Olympics is a traditional event with a long history starting from Zeus, Greece.

Thousands of athletes from across the world participate in the Olympics. The competition has a variety of summer and winter sports, and almost 200 countries participate in these games.

Tokyo Olympics 2020

For 2020, three cities were shortlisted, viz, Tokyo, Istanbul, and Madrid. Baku and Doha were not given candidate status, while Rome withdrew its bid. Finally, after voting and ballots, Tokyo was selected to be the host city for the Olympics 2020.

But as we all know, the whole world was fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Some countries such as Canada and Australia even decided to withdraw from the Olympics 2020 if it was not postponed.

The doping test staff facilitation was complex in place of the COVID testing. The losses for the maintenance of the Olympic infrastructure were huge.

However as suggested by experts, the decision was made in lieu of infection risk, not from the economic losses. Hence, the event was postponed to the summer of 2021 but is still called as Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 for India

Tokyo Olympics 2020 has been a proud moment for India. India finished the tournament in the 48th position. Tokyo Olympic medal tally has been the highest position in the past four decades.

If the total number of medals are to be considered, India would have finished at 33rd, but only the Gold Medal is considered while ranking. The last best ranking for India was 51st in the Beijing Olympics 2008. In the Tokyo Olympics, India participated in 69 events.

India earned a total of 18 medals across different athletics disciplines. India participated in the regular Olympics in 1920, and for India, the Tokyo Olympics was the most successful event. The medal tally for India is seven medals with one gold, two silver, and four bronze. Here is the complete list of:

Indian Medalist at Tokyo Olympics 2020 for India

1. Neeraj Chopra

Sports: Athlete

Medal: Gold

Prize Money: A lot many entities have announced various prize money for the Golden Boy. Haryana Government announced a prize money of INR 6 Cr, and Punjab Government announced a prize money of INR 2 Cr while BYJU announced a prize money of INR 2 Cr.

BCCI has announced prize money of INR 1 Cr, and Manipal Cabinet gave prize money of INR 1 Cr. IPL franchise CSK announced prize money of INR 1 Cr while Anand Mahindra gifted SUV XUV 700. Indigo offered free travel to Neeraj Chopra for one year.

Background: Neeraj Chopra is the only son of Satish Kumar and Saroj Devi, born in Chandra village of Panipat, Haryana. He hails from an agricultural background. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab.

2. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu

Sports: Weightlifter

Medal: Silver

Prize Money: She received INR 1 Cr from the Government of Manipur along with INR 35 lacs for qualifying and participating in the Olympics. BYJU’s declared an award for INR 1 Cr.

The government of India awarded her INR 50 Lacs while the Railway Minister awarded her INR 2Cr. BCCI announced a prize of INR 50 lacs, and the Indian Olympic Association awarded INR 40 lakhs.

Background: Mirabai Chanu was born about 30 km away from Imphal city in Nongpok Kakching in Manipur. She was born into the Meitei family, who identified her strength at the age of 12 when she would carry loads of firewood quite easily.

She has shared her prize money with all the lorry drivers who helped her commute for her practice.

3. Ravi Kumar Dahiya

Sports: Wrestler

Medal: Silver

Prize Money: The government of India announced a reward of INR 50 lacs while the Government of Haryana announced a prize of INR 4 Cr. BCCI declared an award of INR 50 lacs, and the Indian Olympic Association announced the award of INR 40 lacs. 

Background: Ravi Kumar was born in 1997 in Nahri, a small village in Sonipat, Haryana. His father travelled 39 km daily to provide fresh fruits and milk to his son at Chhatrasal Stadium, where Satpal Singh was training him. Ravi Kumar’s father continued this routine for almost a decade.

4. PV Sindhu

Sports: Badminton

Medal: Bronze

Prize Money: The government of India announced a reward of INR 3 M. The Government of Telangana announced prize money of INR 5 M, and the Government of Andhra Pradesh announced a reward of INR 3 M. BYJU’s announced prize money of INR 1 Cr.

In comparison, the BCCI declared prize money of INR 2.5 M, and the Indian Olympic Association declared prize money of INR 2.5 M. 

Background: PV Sindhu was born to PV Ramana and P Vijaya. She was born and brought up in Hyderabad. Her father was an employee of the railways.

Both her parents were National level, volleyball players. Her spirit and dedication were recognized in her attitude to reporting daily on time for practice at the court, 56 km away from her home.

5. Lovlina Borgohain

Sports: Boxing

Medal: Bronze

Prize Money: BCCI announced prize money of INR 25 lacs while BYJU announced prize money of INR 1 Cr. The government of Assam declared prize money of INR 50 lacs, and the Government of India declared prize money of INR 30 lacs. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has declared a prize of INR 3 lacs. 

Background: Lovlina Borgohain was born in 1997 to Tiken and Mamoni Borgohain in the Goghalghat district of Assam. Her father was a small struggling businessman.

Her elder twin sisters were also National level kickboxers. She was recognized and selected by Coach Padum Chandra Bodo during trials at her school.

6. Bajrang Punia

Sports: Wrestler

Medal: Bronze

Prize Money: The government of India announced prize money of INR 30 lacs while the Government of Haryana announced prize money of INR 2.5 Cr. BCCI declared a prize of INR 25 lacs, and the Indian Olympic Association declared an award of INR 25 lacs.

Background: Bajrang Puni was born to a wrestler’s father. He was born in Khudan village in the Jhajjar district. He began wrestling at the young age of seven years.

His family shifted to Sonipat for Bajrang’s training. Currently, he is working in Indian Railways as a Gazette Officer. He is married to Sangita Phogat, one of the wrestling Phogat sisters.

7. Men’s Hockey Team

Sports: Hockey

Medal: Bronze

Prize Money: The government of Punjab declared INR 2.5 Cr to Surendra Kumar and Sumit along with a government job. The government of Kerala declared INR 2 Cr PR Sreejesh with promotion as Joint Director in the Education Dept.

The government of Punjab declared INR 2.51 Cr to each player while the Government of Odisha declared INR 2.5 Cr to each player. BCCI declared INR 1.25 to the team while BYJU’s declared INR 1Cr to the team. Indian Olympic Association declared INR 25 lacs.

Background: India won a bronze medal in hockey after decades. None of these members was even born when India won the last hockey match. The loss to Australia with a whooping score of 7-1 only boosted their performance.

Captain Manpreet Singh’s team gave a brilliant performance thereafter and secured a place in a bronze playoff. The win against Germany came in 5-4 and the match could be watched again and again. These boys do have some more wins to come.

Apart from these winners, Kamalpreet Kaur and Deepak Punia exhibited stellar performances in the Tokyo Olympics. They were bad luck that they could not bring back the medal, but their performance assured them an award in the 2024 Olympics. Kamalpreeet stood sixth in the discus throw.

Apart from the Men’s Hockey team, the Women’s Hockey team also showcased extraordinary performance. The team had enormous self-belief which holds them against Great Britain to score 3-4 and lose the medal with a very narrow margin.

We wish congratulations to all the winners as well as the performers. And best of luck for the subsequent Olympics. As rightly said by Mr. Sachin Tendulkar, “We win, or we learn.” We never lose.
