The rehabilitation of refugees started in India with a public housing program just after Independence Day. A Government of India initiative to provide housing for urban poor is called as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The target is to provide two crore or twenty million houses to all the urban poor. The completion date is 31st March 2022.

This scheme is converged with other schemes such as Saubhagya Yojana which provides electricity to every home, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which provides toilets for every citizen, Jan Dhan which provides banking facilities to all, Jal Jeevan Mission which provides drinking water to the citizen, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana LPG which provides a gas connection to all homes, etc.

This housing facility provides a complete urbanized home for all the economically lower class of people in urban as well as rural areas. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna has been divided into two components.

The two components of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are providing affordable housing for the urban poor which is known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna – Urban or PMAYU while the other component is for the rural poor which is known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna – Rural or PMAYG or PMAYR.

As of 19th December 2019, the Yojana had a registered people of 1.12 crore while only 1.0 crore homes were approved. The PMAY has been divided into three phases viz.

Phase I shall be from April 2015 to March 2017 which shall cover 100 cities, Phase II shall be from April 2017 to March 2019 which shall cover additional 200 cities and Phase 3 from April 2019 to March 2022 which shall cover remaining cities.

What Is PM Awas Yojana?

Awas Yojana in India dates back to the post-independence period when the Public Housing Program was started for the rehabilitation of refugees.

In 1957, then Prime Minister Nehru started a second five-year plan for public housing and slowly it was extended to the Village Housing Programme.

In 1985, Rajiv Gandhi announced the Indira Awas Yojana to give a boost to Public Housing to target SC/ST and Minority population. This program was further extended to provide housing for Below Poverty Level Population.

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana which aims to provide affordable housing in major cities in India. Almost 2 crore houses for urban poor which included Economically Weaker Sections and Low-Income Groups are being covered.

The main features of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana include interest subsidy of 6.5% (for EWS and LIG), 4% for MIG-I, and 3% for MIG-II on housing loans taken by the beneficiaries for a period of 20 years with credit link subsidy scheme (CLSS).  

The houses would be constructed through eco–friendly technology. On the ground floors in any housing scheme under PMAY, preference will be given to differently-abled and older persons.

Who Finances Pm Awas Yojna?

The government of India has approved INR 43,922 crore for building 6,83,724 houses of urban poor which includes central assistance of INR 10,050 crore by 2016. Many beneficiaries have been helped by IIFL home loans and Home First Finance Company to avail of Credit Linked Subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

ICICI too is giving subsidies for the home loans who are eligible for PMAY. AU Housing Finance Limited is also doing subsidy-based funding.

How To Apply for PM Awas Yojana Online

PMAY is a hope to give affordable homes to the urban poor. The deadline set is 2022 and the government has identified 2508 cities across 26 states and approximately 2 million houses shall be built.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has a simple process allowing people to apply for a house under the scheme. The form has two pages which have key details to be filled out. Below is a page-wise idea.

Page 1: Aadhaar Number

You need to”Enter Aadhaar Number”. After the verification of your Aadhar number, the application proceeds to the next page. Aadhaar number is used by the government to ensure that an individual applies for the scheme and doesn’t defraud the system.

Page 2: Personal Details 

This page is to enter the personal details of the applicant. The person should provide information pertaining to the state, the head of the family, current residential address, and many such key details.

The following categories are applied to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

·  Slum Dwellers

If you are a slum dweller defined as a community where 60 or 70 households or almost 300 people stay in a poorly built residence without any basic amenities.

·  Under Other 3 Components

People who fall under Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Middle Income Groups (MIGs), and Lower Income Groups (LIGs) can apply for PMAY. Each category is divided based on maximum annual income.

Where To Apply for PM Awas Yojana?

Once you are ready with your information, you can apply through the following website and follow the given steps.

Step 1: Log on to the official Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana at pmaymis.gov.in

Step 2: Choose the ‘Benefits under other 3 components’ option by clicking the ‘Citizen Assessment’ dropdown

Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar number and click submit. (The site will verify whether the Aadhaar details provided are correct).

Step 4: you will be redirected to the next page where you will have to provide all the pertinent information regarding your name, income, no. of family members, residential address, contact number, age of the head of the family, religion, caste and the like provided the Aadhaar number is verified.

Step 5: Once all the information is provided, scroll down, then type the captcha code in the box and click submit.

With this PMAY online application process ends.

How To Check the Status of PM Awas Yojna? 

You can track your application by following the below-mentioned steps. 

  1. Visit http://pmaymis.gov.in/, the official website of the PMAY scheme.
  2. Go to the option titled ‘Citizen Assessment’ on the taskbar.
  3. Select the option ‘Track your Assessment status’ from the drop-down menu under Citizen Assessment.
  4. When you click on ‘Track your Assessment status’, you will be redirected to another page titled ‘Track Application Status’.
  5. Once you reach this page, you have to choose one of the two options viz. Option 1 – ‘By Name, Father’s Name & Mobile No’ OR Option 2 – Assessment ID

 PM Awas Yojna Terms & Conditions

Below are the terms and conditions for PMAY

(a) Beneficiary max age 70 years.

(b) EWS (Economic Weaker Section) family income should be between ₹3 lakhs per annum and for LIG (Lower Income Group) Family Income should be between ₹6 Lakhs per annum, and Middle-Income Group -(MIG-I) income between ₹6 lakhs to ₹12 lakhs per annum, (MIG-II) income between ₹12 lakhs to ₹18 lakhs per annum.

(c) The beneficiary should not have an own dwelling unit in the name of any family member in any part of India.

(d) The loan applicant should not have availed any central/state government subsidy or benefit for buying a home under the PMAY scheme.

(e) Currently, the loan applicant should not own any property under their name and along with any of the family members (including the dependents).

(f) The home renovation or improvement loans, and self-construction loans will be allocated only for EWS and LIG categories.

(g) The houses given under this scheme will be owned by females or jointly with males.
