We all had started 2020 with a bang and a list of plans and a bucket list to complete. But as 2020 progressed we all have been in a kind of house arrest. Now it has been six months that we have Remote Working or Work from Home.
This pandemic has become a boon of Work from Home for most of the industries that thought Work from Home was a myth such as the Engineering Consulting Industry. But almost half a year and with some initial hiccups everyone is set to work from home.

Maybe this will become a new normal in the coming years. Maybe this would save a lot of energy, infrastructure load and vehicular traffic as companies would be seriously considering this option.
But it is not as easy as said. Remote Working or Work from Home can bring many challenges. Maybe we will have to live with the new normal of Working from Home. We have been postponing the vacations for the whole pandemic time. We have come up with common mistakes to avoid when remote working and how to correct them.

1. Over Working
After the pandemic, working from home can become the new normal and we all would have to face some tough challenges. It has been observed that six months into the pandemic everyone has burnt out.
The screen time and working hours have stretched beyond the normal. It is said that people are burnt by the pressure of performance in working from home. Many of the people are working beyond normal working hours.
Maybe with no commuting early morning could give a good and productive time. It is observed that employees are logging in very early morning or late at night. The boundary between work line and personal life has almost vanished.

2. Behaviour Patterns
With working together in actual physical vicinity it is easy to say about inappropriate behaviour. But with working away from each other this is blurred out. With everyone working from home no one would have faced harassment.
The surveys say that people are more focused on health, safety and company values rather than salary and career advancement. A lot of people feel safe at home and they say feeling safe is more important than salary or career advancement.
People are happier with flexible working hours rather than higher pay or promotions. People have been looking for strong and respectful relationships between work colleagues.

3. Unproductive Meeting
This Remote Working or Work from Home caused by to global pandemic has called for a huge traffic flow on virtual meetings across the world. These meetings have surely increased in the second quarter of 2020.
People have been always on the emails and catching up with poor planning and inefficient processes. People from different parts of the world have different meeting preferences.
It is said that Germans are having meetings in the noon as they would generally keep the morning spot for more focused work. Britishers would have afternoon meetings in the middle of the week.

4. Empathy
The rift between CEOs and employees continues. Gen Z employees expect a lot more from their leaders. Many people say that employers think that someone having mental health issues is a burden for them and do not want to own them.
Before the pandemic, every employee wanted a flexible schedule to look after the family. The flexible schedule had been more or rather most important. But now six months into working from home has given a new renewed importance for all the employees. Many employees find that in-person communication is more sympathetic and connecting to build a team feeling.
Now these have been the difficulties or the mistakes we make while working from home in this pandemic. But with simple changes or acceptance, these would rather be rectified.

Whether we have blurred the work-life and personal life balance logging in at odd hours working beyond regular timings or having futile meetings, we have to overcome all these challenges. There are different ways to do so.
While Remote Working or Working from Home maintain the same working hours as you would do from the office. Groom up the family to accept that even though physically present in the house they should not be disturbed unless and until it’s an emergency. For meetings, we can go for asynchronous video meetings.
This would combat the futile meeting. This can also help overcome the “Zoom Fatigue” developed nowadays. We all have put family vacations in the back seat. But this needs to be seriously thought about. We need to take a break or a vacation. Of course, this would be back once we are back to normal.

This can be surely encouraged by the top executives. Burnout can hit anyone at any level in any industry. Noticing the signs in your team members before they inhibit performance can allow managers to act quicker, saving productivity and overall morale.
The study says that people who have sought therapy have advanced in their careers in past years. Empathy is a skill for management to hone, taking the perspective that employee mental health isn’t a burden but fundamental to the organization’s success.
It has been observed that a decrease in workplace empathy has reduced the cohesion and morale of the company. The increase in empathy increases the productivity and the bottom line.

The key to attacking mistreatment lies with human resource departments. They need to stay mindful of remote work and employees living behind the screen.
Management can address what can be done in the future to combat inappropriate workplace demands as we adjust to a “new normal.” It’s up to management to create ways to streamline the number of meetings, improve efficiency and afford remote workers more time to get their work done.
A big challenge will remain shortly for the co-existence of productivity and personal health and safety. It should be worked out for a win-win situation for both employees and employers. In a nutshell, Working from home has exhumed the age-old dilemma of work and life balance as the line that used to exist between the two domains has disappeared.
