1. About Vladimir Putin President of Russia

Putin needs no introduction. He has been a strong political contender in Russia. His full name is Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. He was born on 7th October 1952 in Leningrad Russia. At his birth, Russia was part of the Soviet Union. He was the youngest of his siblings.

Putin was born after the deaths of two brothers Viktor, who died in infancy and Albert, who died because of Diphtheria. His father Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin and his mother Maria Ivanovna Putina. His mother worked at a factory. His father worked as a conscript in the Soviet Navy.

Putin’s father served in the destruction battalion of NKVD. He was later transferred to the regular army. In 1942, he was severely wounded. German occupiers of the Tver region killed Putin’s maternal grandmother.

In September 1960, Putin enrolled at School No. 193 at Baskov Lane which was near his home. He started practising sambo and judo when he was twelve years old.

He loved reading Lenin, Engels and Marx. In High School 218 at Saint Petersburg, Putin studied German. In 1970, Putin studied law at Leningrad State University. It is now called Saint Petersburg State University.

He graduated in 1975. His thesis work was “The Most Favoured Nation Trading Principle in International Law.” During his tenure, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He was a member till the party ceased to exist.

Putin met Anatoly Sobchak who was an assistant professor and taught him business law. He later co-authored the Russian constitution and of the corruption schemes which was persecuted in France. Putin and Sobchak were influential in each other’s careers in different towns.

Putin married Lyudmilla Shkrebneva in 1983. He divorced her in 2014. They had two daughters named Maria Putin and Katerina Putin. Their lives have always been under hide.

2. Early Career of Vladimir Putin

Putin joined the KGB in 1975. He was trained at 401st KGB school which is in Okhta, Leningrad. Post-training, he worked as the Second Chief Directorate.

Later he was transferred to First Chief Directorate. During this tenure, he supervised foreigners and consular officials in Leningrad. Putin was trained at Yuri Andropov Red Banner Institute in 1984.

He worked as a translator in Dresden, East Germany from 1985 to 1990 which is most unclear during this period. As per Putin’s official biography, in November 1989, he saved the files of the Soviet Cultural Centre and KGB villa in Dresden.

He burned all the Soviet Union files but saved all the archives which were required by German authorities. Masha Gessen is a Russian American authored biography about Putin. Putin resigned from active KGB after the collapse of the Communist East German government.

He was back in Leningrad in 1990 and worked for International Affairs and looked after recruits. In 1999, Putin described communism as “a blind alley, far away from the mainstream of civilization”.

3. First and Second Presidential Term of Vladimir Putin

On 7th May 2000, Putin was chosen as President. His first presidential term was from 2000 to 2004. In August 2000, he was criticized for his action about the Kursk submarine disaster.

Putin reconstructed the impoverished condition of Russia. He won a power struggle against the Russian oligarch with a grand bargain. He was again criticized for Moscow theatre hostage handling.

During these 130 hostages were rescued however President Putin’s popularity was severely damaged. However, after the situation, 83% of people voted to be satisfied by President Putin. Chechnya was declared part of Russia in 2003 and acquired autonomy.

Russia disabled Chechen rebel movements during the Second Chechen War. In 2004, on 14th March, Putin was re-elected as President of Russia. He received a whopping 71% of votes.

Just after being elected for the second presidential term, the Beslan School hostage happened. It happened on 1–3 September 2004, in which more than 330 people died, out of which 186 were children.

After the dissolution of the Soviet, the ten-year period was a time of turbulence in Russia. Putin stated the collapse of the Soviet as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the Twentieth Century timely.”

He further stated, “Moreover, the epidemic of disintegration infected Russia itself.” In 2005, the health care, housing, education and agriculture of Russia were improved by launching National Priority Projects.

Khodorkovsky’s donation to liberal and communist opponents of the Kremlin caused fraud and tax evasion cases against Russia’s richest man and President of Yukos Oil and Company Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Anna Politkovskaya was found shot dead in her apartment building on 7th October 2007.

She was a journalist who tried to expose corruption in the Russian army and its conduct in Chechnya. Former chess champion Garry Kasparov and national Bolshevist leader Eduard Limonov led “The Other Russia” group organised “Dissenters Marches.”

On 12 September 2007, Putin dissolved the government at the request of Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov.

Fradkov commented that it was to give the President a “freehand” in the run-up to the parliamentary election. Viktor Zubkov was appointed the new prime minister. In December 2007, United Russia won 64.24% of the popular vote in their run for State Duma according to election preliminary results.

4. As Prime Minister Term of Vladimir Putin

Before the third presidential election, Putin was barred from the same. Dmitry Medvedev, first deputy Prime Minister, was elected as the successor of Putin.

Putin was appointed as Prime Minister of Russia on the next day of the power-switching operation on 8th May 2008.

Putin said that overcoming the consequences of the world economic crisis was one achievement while stabilising the size of Russia’s population was another achievement. These were the two main achievements of his two Premierships.

5. Third Presidential Term of Vladimir Putin

Medvedev recommended nominating Putin as a presidential candidate on 24 September 2011. Putin won these presidential elections on 4th March 2021. He won by 63.6% of the votes. After this win, the opposition accused Putin and United Russia of fraud.

During, and after the presidential campaign anti–Putin protests took place. The Pussy Riot was the most notorious protest. On 7th May 2012, the presidency of Putin was inaugurated in the Kremlin.

Putin issued 14 Presidential decrees on the very first day which stated wide-raging goals for Russia’s economy, housing, skilled labour training, relations with the European Union, education, defence industry, inter-ethnic relations and other policies. These were also known as “May Decrees.”

6. Fourth Presidential Term of Vladimir Putin

In 2018, Putin won the fourth presidential term with 76% of the vote. His fourth term shall be from 2018 to 2024. Dmitry Medvedev was called to form a new government.

During his fourth term, he took part in the movement’s opening along the highway section of the Crimean Bridge. He signed decrees and announced that he would not run for the presidential election in 2024.

During his fourth Presidential tenure, the Russia-Ukrainian crisis popped up. It started back in 2021 when Ukraine started a military exercise with NATO forces. Kremlin has warned that NATO expanding in military infrastructure in Ukraine would cross “red lines” for Putin. On 24th February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine.

Putin has served the longest term as president of Russia. He has taken some of the good decisions for Russia.
