Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Trial Highlights

Mr. Johnny Depp and Ms. Amber Heard fought a battle for divorce in 2016 and finally were granted divorce in 2017. In 2018, Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard sued each other over the op-ed publication.

1. About: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Trial Highlights

The defamation case was filed by Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard against each other. Jury of the defamation trial found that Mr. Depp was de-famed in the 2018 op-ed.

Jury passed the verdict in the favour of Mr. Depp. Jury had given a split verdict. They also mentioned that one of the three statements around which Ms. Heard’s lawsuit revolved, was defamatory.

As per the verdict, Mr. Depp was awarded $15 million in damages. The penal damage was capped in accordance with the legal limit which resulted in $10.35 million. Ms. Heard was also awarded $2 million in damages.

The courtroom case was more than a fierce battleground questioning the relationship between Ms. Heard and Mr. Depp. Both parties accused the other of repeated domestic abuse.

It was a six-week trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court. The lawyers cross-examined witnesses about the event which unveiled the cyclonic romance which had started on a movie set. The romance had turned into a storm of fights and physical confrontations.

2. Why Amber Heard Was Suing Johnny Depp?

Ms. Heard had also filed a lawsuit against Mr. Depp which the jury was simultaneously considering. The case Ms. Heard put was against Mr. Depp. But the statements which were the basis of the case were from his lawyer, Adam Waldman.

He had stated to The Daily Mail that the allegation by Ms. Heard was an “abuse hoax.”

Ms. Heard’s lawsuit claimed that Mr. Depp “authorized and conspired” with Mr. Waldman. The lawsuit also stated that Mr. Waldman was stating on the actor’s behalf to “attempt to destroy and defame Ms. Heard in the press.”

3. Why Johnny Depp Was Suing Amber Heard?

Mr. Depp filed a lawsuit against Ms. Heard in 2019 for the op-ed in The Washington Post in 2018. The article didn’t mention Mr. Depp. Ms. Heard wrote in it that two years before the article’s publication, she became a “public figure representing the domestic abuse.”

In 2016, Ms. Heard turned up to California Court with a bruised face and hence was granted a restraining order. The application she submitted said that Mr. Depp has thrown a phone at her at a very close range as well said that Mr. Depp was physically and verbally abusive throughout the relationship.

Mr. Depp’s lawsuit asserted that the allegations put by Ms. Heard were an “elaborate hoax” which tampered with Mr. Depp’s career and reputation. “Mr. Depp brings this defamation action to clear his name,” the actor’s lawsuit said.

4. What Did Amber Heard Say in Her Testimony?

Ms. Heard informed me about the pattern of violence. As per the statement, he would lash out at her when he was drugged or drunk. She said that Mr. Depp would start with the accusation of her cheating on him and end up attacking her physically in spite of her denials.

Ms. Heard said that “he would explode” while remembering how he punched the walls next to her head, slap her continuously, and shoved her head to the ground. She also described an incident in 2015 which happened during the filming of “Pirates of the Caribbean” in Australia.

Ms. Hear broke into tears while stating the various incidences such as hitting her face, ripping her gown, throwing her across the room, and grabbing her by the neck. Mr. Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, presented some love notes, text messages,s and audio clips which indicated that Ms. Heard was an unreliable witness.

Camille even stated that Ms. Heard did not have any medical records and if she would have been struck then bruise and swelling would have been evident to which Mr. Heard replied, “You should see what it looked like underneath the makeup,” Ms. Heard said of one photo.

5. What Did Johnny Depp Say in His Testimony?

In his testimony, Mr. Depp has a very different version of their relationship. He said that he never hit Ms. Heard or any other woman for that matter. In fact, he stated that Ms. Heard was aggressive in the relationship. She was engaged in angry vilification and demeaning name calling which would end up in physical violence.

Mr. Depp shared accountancies when Ms. Heard would start with a slap or a shove or by throwing the TV remote or throwing a glass of wine at his face.

During the trials, Mr. Rotten born questioned Mr. Heard about the text messages he sent to his friends mentioning Ms. Heard as a “worthless hooker” to which he replied with a suggestion about creativity and exaggeration.

“When I write a text, especially if I’m in a particularly impassioned place, it’s a canvas, it’s a painting,” Mr. Depp said. “You choose your colors.”

6. What Did Johnny Depp’s Witnesses Tell the Court?

The jury heard from various witnesses whose declarations were opposite of Ms. Heard’s version of events. Ms. Heard has talked about Mr. Depp throwing her phone at her but when three police officers showed up at their Los Angeles home found nothing.

The property manager of Australia home, Mr. Ben King said that he saw some damage in the home. He informed about broken glass, blood, and topple Ping–Pong table.

Shortly after the incident, Ms. Heard and Mr. Depp were treated by private nurse Erin Falati who did not see any injuries on Ms. Heard’s face.

Laurel Anderson, a marriage counselor, said that their relationship had “mutual abuse.” Jack Whigham, talent manager of Mr. Depp, said that after the op-ed he lost a deal of $22.5 million for the sixth Pirates movie.

Shannon Curry stated that Ms. Heard has a borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. She denied the fact that Ms. Heard had signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

7. What Did Amber Heard’s Witnesses Tell the Court?

Dr. Dawn Huges, a forensic psychologist of Ms. Heard presented a different report. Dr. Hughes believed that Ms. Heard had post-traumatic disorder due to the abuse she experienced from Mr. Depp. She flatly rejected the personality disorder diagnosis.

Ms. Whitney Henriques said that she saw Mr. Depp grab Ms. Heard by the hair and hit her face repeatedly. To protect herself, Ms. Heard punched Mr. Depp in the face. She also shared an incidence later in the years in which Mr. Depp head-butted her and threw clumps of her hair.

A makeup artist testified about the injuries which were covered with makeup for James Corden’s late-night show.

After the Australia visit, Ms. Heard had cuts on her arms and feet which were seen by her friend Raquel Pennington. As shared by Tracey Jacobs, Mr. Depp’s former agent showcased a pattern of “unprofessional behavior” such as high use of drugs and alcohol and being late on movie sets.

The jury declared the case in favor of Mr. Depp and was awarded $10 million. He was exonerated from the charges of an abuser as Ms. Heard fabricated the charges of being abused by Mr. Depp in the short marriage stance.
