20 Incidents That Shocked the Whole World
1. Start Of World War I – July 1914
World War I started on 28th July 1914 and ended on 11th November 1918. This is also known as “Great War”. At the inception of war included most of Europe, Russia, United states and Turkey and spread to Middle East, Asia and Africa.
Almost 9 million people across the world were killed while fighting. Almost 5 million people died as collateral damage due to bombardment, unemployment, hunger or disease.

2. Russian Revolution, 1917
During World War I, Russia faced an internal revolution. This revolution was called The October Revolution or Bolshevik Revolution. It was officially known as the Great October Socialist Revolution.
The revolution let by Bolshevik Party of Vladimir Lenin played and radical role for Russian Revolution which happened between 1917 – 1923. This was the second revolutionary change which happened in Russia.

3. Start Of World War II, 1939
The world was just emerging from the Great Depression, when German Nazis invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. Just two days later, Britain and France declared war against Germany and thus marked the inception of World War II.
During the early days of war, western Europe witnessed very little land or air active military confrontation. Hence it was termed as Phoney War. This war was fought mainly between the Allies and the Axis Power.

4. Pearl Harbour – And Entry of The Us into WWII, 1941
Imperial Japan Navy Air service strike Pearl Harbour which was United States naval base. This attack was not envisaged as United states was a neutral entity. However, with this attached United States as pulled in World War II the very next day of attack.
Without any formal obligation and in spite of Tripartite Pact, Japan, Germany and Italy declared war against US.

5. Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima, 1945
The World War II was at the end when Germany surrendered on 8th May 1945. The allies turned the full attention to the Pacific War. Allies Manhattan Project had developed two atomic bombs viz “Fat Man” and “Little Boy”.
After the consent of United Kingdom under Quebec Agreement, United States targeted Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Niigata and Kokura. On 6th and 9th August respectively, United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities of Japan.

6. Indian Independence, 1947
India celebrates Independence Day on 15th August. The Indian Independence was a series of events which happened during British Raj. The aim for the events was to end the British Raj in Indian subcontinent.
The first nationalistic revolutionary movement for Indian Independence was started in Bengal. The movement was further rotted by Indian National Congress.

7. Assassination Of Mahatma Gandhi, 1948
Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi on 30th January 1948. Gandhi was skilled when he was in compound of Birla House which is a large mansion near New Delhi. Nathuram Godse was a Chitpavan Brahmin from Pune, Maharashtra.
He was a member of Hindu Maha-Sabha as well as a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He considered that Gandhi was accommodating Muslims during partition of India.

8. Establishment Of Maoist China, 1949
Maoism is a variety of Marxism – Leninism. This was officially called as Mao Zedong Thought. The Chinese Communist Party developed the thought for socialist revolution in agricultural.
The philosophical difference between Maoism and traditional Marxism – Leninism is that the peasantry are the revolutionary vanguard in pre-industrial societies rather than the proletariat.

9. Pele, 1958
Pele was a Brazilian footballer who shined in the International Olympic in 1999. He was voted as 100 most important people of 20th Century. He was also world player of the Century by International Federation of Football History & Statistics.
He started playing at the age of 15 years of age and was in Brazil National team at the age of 16. He won FIFA World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He won 72 goals in 92 games and was all time leading goal scorer.

10. Assassination Of John F Kennedy, 1963
John F Kennedy was assassinated on 22nd November 1963 in Dallas, Texas. He was riding in presidential motorcade along with his wife, Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie Connally.
John F Kennedy was brutally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Governor Connally was seriously wounded however recovered and Kennedy was declared dead in 30 mins after shooting.

11. Martin Luther King Jr, 1968
Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist minister. He became known as leader and spokesperson during the civil rights movement. He advanced and worked for civil rights of people of colour in United States.
He was civil rights through civil disobedience and nonviolence. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi for nonviolence. He led a targeted movement against Jim crow. He was assassinated in 1968.
12. Astronaut Armstrong Sets Foot on The Moon, 1969
Astronaut Armstrong was the first human being to set foot on the moon on 20th July 1969. He travelled to moon through Apollo 11. He was on moon for almost two and quarters hours.
They together explored the site they had named Tranquillity Base upon landing. Armstrong collected almost 47.5 pound of lunar material which was brought back to Earth.

13. Fall Of the Berlin Wall, 1989
The fall of Berlin Wall was an important event in world history. The event was marked by fall of Iron Curtain. This event was also start of fall of communism in Eastern and Central Europe. This event was preceded by Solidarity Movement in Poland. Shortly afterward, the inner German border fell. This marked the end of Cold War was declared at Malta Summit three weeks later.

14. Soviet Union Collapse, 1991
As an unexpected outcome the Soviet Union was disintegrated in 1991. It was due to General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. The Soviet Union was dissolved in different nations.
Mikhail Gorbachev wanted to have political reform which backfired and disintegrated the Soviet Union. The cold war was ended with the dissolution of Soviet Union.

15. 9/11 September Attacks, 2000
9/11 attacks were a series of four coordinated suicide terrorist attack. This was carried out by militant Islamic extremist network Al-Qaeda against United states.
The terrorist hijacked four commercial airlines mid flight while travelling from north-eastern US to California. The aim was to crash the planes in prominent American buildings, major structural damage and inflicting mass casualties.
16. Recession Crisis, 2007-09
2008 was called The Great Recession. This period was marked by general decline in national economies across the globe. The crisis started in 2007 and lasted till 2009.
The timing and scale of recession varied from each country. During the time of IMF i.e., International Monetary Fund concluded that it was the most serve financial and economic meltdown.
17. 26/11 Mumbai Attack, 2008
26/11 2008 Mumbai witnessed a series of terrorist attacks by Islamist group of Lashkar-e-Taiba. This was an organisation from Pakistan who carried our 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacked across Mumbai.
The attack started at the mid night and ended early in the morning. Hundreds were killed and wounded in the attacks. These attacks drew widespread global condemnation.
18. Covid-19 Pandemic, March 2020
Covid 19 was a global pandemic which was caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Various attempts were made however all efforts failed.
These failed attempts allowed the virus to spread worldwide. WHO declared Public Health Emergency of International Concern? This virus has seen a lot of variants. This virus has been a deadliest virus in history.
19. Russia Ukraine War, 2022
Russia opened war of Ukraine on 22nd February 2022. The war had begun in February 2014 after Ukrainian Revolution of dignity. The first eight years of conflict was Russian Annexation of Crimea. The war in Donbas has been since long.
The Russia backed separatist and Ukraine has naval incidents, political tensions and cyberwarfare. This war had affected many countries across world due to wheat unavailability.
20. Sri Lanka Economic Crisis, 2022
Sri Lankan government has brought the country in economic crisis with some wrong decisions. The reason behind economic crisis is due to economic mismanagement, depleting foreign exchange reserves, a rise of external debt, rising prices and weakened currency.
The trigger for the downfall was due to the shift of farming to organic farming. The ruling coalition had lost majority and brought political turmoil increased with resignation of cabinet ministers.
