Indian Defence Ministry`s Nod to 33 New Russian Fighter Jets for $2.43bn | India buy New Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet

Russia is ready to deliver Sukhoi Su-30 MKI and Mikoyan-Gurevich MIG-29 Russian fighter aircraft jets as earliest possible.

In a government-to-government deal due to amidst the India-China border tension. The Indian Air Force (IAF) wants 33 fighters–12 Sukhoi Su-30 MKIs and 21 MIG-29s.  

The government of India also made a deal of 36 Rafael Fighter Jet from the French government and out of 36 Rafael India received 5 Rafael Fighter Jet and now Indian Defence Ministry`s Nod to 33 New Russian Fighter Jets for $2.43bn.

What is the Mikoyan MiG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet

The MIG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet is a Twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in 1939 by Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich in the Soviet Union. This fighter aircraft is developed by Mikoyan Design Bureau.

This Fighter Aircraft was first developed with Sukhoi SU-27 in 1970 to counter U.S. fighter aircraft McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and General Dynamics F-16 Fighter Falcon. Mig-29 became a part of the Russian Forces (Earlier Soviet Air Force) in 1982.

Many variants of MIG-29 are designed to fulfil the requirements of different war-like situations. They are capable of all different operations from smaller to large scale. These fighter jets are capable of hitting from air to land and on accurate targets.

MIG-29 is designed in various variants like the Multirole Mikoyan MiG-29M and the Navalised Mikoyan MiG-29K. the most developed model of this fighter aircraft is the MIG-35.  

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union Russian Air Force wanted to upgrade the MIG-29SMT but some financial difficulties didn’t let them do so. Mikoyan has been the producer of MIG-29 along with United Aircraft Corporation since 2006.

The MIG-29 is used to destroy hostile air targets within radar coverage limits and to destroy on-ground targets in visual fight conditions using unguided weapons.

The MIG-29K fighter bomber aircraft is jointly manufactured by RSK MIG and Irkutsk Aircraft Production Association Joint Stock Company. NATO code name Fulcrum was used for MIG-29, 30, and 33.

The MIG-29K is a carrier version. In October 1977 it took off its maiden flight and came into force into service in August 1983.

Development of the Mikoyan MiG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet

MIG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet came into action during World War II. The first MIG-9 flew in 1946 as it worked on Jet propulsion to a piston engine airframe.

The better version of MIG-15 is built of Swept-back wings. It was a copy of the Rolls-Royce engine, and its wings were derived from German wartime research.

These were single-seat, single-engine planes first flown in 1947 and used in the Korean War. The improved version of MIG-17 was first flown in 1950 and used by North Vietnam in the Vietnam War during the 1960s and in the Arab-Israel War of 1973 by Egypt and Syria as a fighter-bomber.

MIG-29 was first flown in 1953 using the first twin engine. It was the first supersonic fighter later it was surpassed by the MIG-21 in 1955 which was a single-engine interceptor that could fly with the speed of sound.

The basic version of a fighter jet was used in 1958. It was simple and low-cost with easy to maintain fighter jet. It was used by North Vietnam. 

The first electronic sensor warning system used in MIG-23 with sweep wings to improve performance at various speeds and altitudes. MIG-27 was an updated version of MIG-23 with an armoured cockpit and space to store weapons. The U.S. came with MIG-25 with supersonic bombers in 1960.

Later in 1983, MIG-31 was introduced with two seats with better performance at lower altitudes. Then MIG-29 became operational in 1985. It was a single-seater, twin-engine air-to-air fighter capable of ground attack.

Design of the Mikoyan MiG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet

Today Russia offers better MIG in comparison to the previous one. Russia modified MIG-29 over the years. The MIG-29 is almost look-a-like the MIG-35. But MIG-35 is better to deal with because MIG-29 has only one potential customer, INDIA.

MIG-29 is similar to Sukhoi Su-27 in terms of aerodynamics. But MIG-29 has some differences. MIG-29 has mid-mounted swept wings with blended leading-edge root extensions (LERXs) swept around 40o.

It has swept tailplanes with two vertical fins mounted on booms outboard of the engine. On the leading edges of the wings, automatic slats are mounted.

These are in four segments on early models and five segments on some later variants. Maneuvering flaps and wingtip ailerons are on trailing edges.

MIG-29 has hydraulic controls. The airframe has materials of aluminium with other composite materials and is capable of stress for up to 9g maneuvers.

MIG-29 has two widely spaced Klimov RD-33 turbofan engines. The space between engines generates lift. MIG-29 has a range of 1,5000 km and 2,100 with an external fuel tank. The fuel capacity of MIG-29 is 4,365 litres distributed in six internal fuel tanks.  

MIG-29 cockpit has a conventional centre stick with left-hand throttle controls. The pilot sits in a Zvezda K-36DM ejection seat.

The baseline segment of MIG-29B has a Phazotron RLPK-29 radar fire control system, including N019 Sapfir 29 Look-Down/Shoot-Down coherent pulse-Doppler radar and the Ts100.02-02 digital computer.

MIG-29 fighter jet equipped with seven external weapon hardpoints. MIG-29 can carry two R-27, six R-73 and R-60 missiles and four pods of S-5, S-8, and S-24 rockets with 30 mm built-in aircraft guns with 150 rounds of ammunition.

MIG-29 Russian Fighter Aircraft Jet can climb at the rate of 330m/s. the maximum and cruise speed respectively are 2,400km/h and 1,500km/h.

The ferry range is 2,100km. the range and service ceiling are 1,430 km and 18,000m.
