The Kashmir Files Movie Review (2022) a True Story of Kashmiri Pandits have been talked of the town. Everyone is applauding the actors and director of the film. The Kashmir Files is a Hindi movie drama which is directed and written by Vivek Agnihotri.

The film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. This happened during the period of Kashmir Insurgency. It is portrayed as a genocide.

The film has won the hearts of millions. It is in its third week and still going strong at the box office. The film had a budget of INR 150 M and has collected a whopping INR 2801.3 M.

The film received box office success but on the other hand, it also received critical reception.

1. Narrative of the Kashmir Files Movie

The film opens in the era of 1989 – 1990 in the region of Kashmir. During, that time Islamic militants banished Kashmiri Hindu Pandits from Kashmir Valley. They used the slogan.

“Raliv, Galiv ya Chaliv,”

Which means,

“Convert to Islam, leave or die,”

Another slogan used was “Mustafa Batte Safa” which means with god’s grace whole Kashmiri Pandit community will leave the valley.

Pushkar Nath Pandit is a teacher in the valley. He is afraid for his son Karan’s safety. He has been accused of being an Indian spy by the Islamic militants. Pushkar has a civil servant friend Brahma Dutt.

Pushkar calls Brahma for the protection of Karan. Brahma comes to Kashmir with Pushkar. He is completely devastated to see the plight of Kashmiri Pandits and the violence against them. Brahma discusses the issue with the J&K Chief minister who immediately suspends Brahma.

Farooq Malik Bitta who is a militant commander infringes on Pushkar Nath’s house. He has also been a student of Pushkar. When Farooq breaches Pushkar’s house, Karan is hiding in a rice container. He is found by Bitta and shot.

Pushkar and Sharda, Pushkar’s daughter-in-law, beg for their lives. Bitta gives a deal to them. He asked Sharda to eat rice soaked in Karan blood in exchange for their lives.

After Bitta leaves, Pushkar takes Karan to a hospital. Pushkar requests his friend Mahesh Kumar to save Karan’s life. But at the same time, militants take over the hospital and demand to treat only Muslim patients.

All doctors are forbidden to treat non-Muslims. In the meantime, Karan succumbs to the injuries of the gunshots.

Vishnu Ram, a friend of Pushkar takes him to Kaul. Kaul is a Hindu poet and has a cordial relationship with Muslims. Kaul takes many Pandits into his home. Despite the cordial relations, a group of militants comes and picks Kaul and his son.

They give protection. The other pandits leave the place. They are later shocked to see the bodies of Kaul and his son hanging from the tree.

Brahma also helps Sharda to get a government job in Nadimarg in Kashmir. The family moves to Nadimarg. Bitta headed by a group of militants arrives in Nadimarg dressed up as the Indian Army.

They round up Pandits living in Nadimarg. Sharda fights with militants when they catch hold of her elder son Shiva.

Bitta stripes her and sees her half-naked body. And then lines up all Pandits and Shiva. He shoots everyone into the mass grave. Pushkar is left alive to give the message about what happened in Nadimarg.

Post this incident, the movie shows present-day India. Pushkar raises Sharda’s younger son Krishna. Krishna is brought up with the belief that his parents have died in an accident.

Krishna is a student of ANU and he is under the influence of professor Radhika Menon. She is a strong supporter of Kashmiri separatism.

In one of the shots, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Pushkar, and police officer Hari Narain remember the memories of the Kashmir valley.

Each of them has served in Kashmir and has vivid memories of the Kashmir Valley. Brahma calls the incident genocide.

Krishna contest for student election at ANU. He holds the Government of India responsible for the Kashmir valley issue. He is influenced by Professor Radhika Menon.

This behavior of Krishna angers Pushkar. After Pushkar’s death, Krishna goes to Kashmir to scatter his ashes as Pushkar’s last wish.

Menon as Krishna to shoot some videos in Kashmir to expose the government’s supposed atrocities.

Menon’s contact helps Krishna to meet Bitta. Krishna accuses him of the situation of the Pandits.

Bitta says himself to be a new-age Gandhi. He says he is leading a non-violent democratic movement. Bitta claims the Indian army to be at fault.

He informs Krishna that the Indian army killed his mother and brother. Brahma tells Krishna the complete truth.

Krishna returns to Delhi. He shares the plight of his family and the history of Kashmiri Pandits in a speech. This comes as a bolt from blue to Professor Menon and her students.

The movie closes with the shot of Krishna being met with resistance from some students while embraced by a few.

2. Studio Where Movie Filmed

The movie was shot by Zee Studio. The movie was started in December 2020. The first lot of movies were shot in Mussoorie. The entire movie was shot in 30 days.

The movie was mainly shot in Mussoorie and Dehradun. Post the shooting, a week-long shooting was done in Kashmir along with Dal Lake. The production was wrapped in January 2021.

3. Facts & Reality in the Movie

The movie states some facts wrongly which could be as a liberty on account of cinematography.

The movie says Ganjoo was killed during the period but the same is not true. Farooq confesses on camera to killing 20 Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990s.

However, the involvement of Farooq in the Nadimarg massacre is done by Zia Mustafa who belongs to a completely different terrorist group.

The truth is mingled with the facts about blaming some of the politicians. The movie has some controversies as well as the fact being tweaked.

The Kashmir Files have received applause from many critics too. The movie is rated 3.5 out of 5 by Stutee Ghosh for The Quint.

Shubhra Gupta rated the movie 1.5 out of 5 for The Indian Express. Rohit Bhatnagar rated 2.5 on 5 for The Free Press.

Every actor has done their bit and given the best to their role. But the film has also been accused of being propaganda of the ruling party which aims to foster prejudice against Muslims.

The film also had accusations of historical revisionism. The ruling party has promoted, endorsed, and provided tax-free status to the movie.
