Geoscientist Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman has been ranking the best beaches in The United States of America for more than 30 years. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach in North Carolina has been named the best beach in the US in his annual Best Beaches awards.
Awards are based on safety, sand quality, cleanliness, and a ban on smoking. “I give extra credits to beaches with no smoking,” he says. North Carolina’s Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach is recognized for its iconic 1823 lighthouse.
Leatherman also recommends the Old Lighthouse Beach at Buxton, which is further north in the Outer Banks. “If you want to walk, you go to Cape Cod’s Coast Guard Beach,” says Leatherman. Here is a complete list of:

1. Lifeguarded Ocracoke Beach
North Carolina’s Outer Bank`s Lifeguarded Ocracoke Beach. Why it was included: According to Leatherman, “Ocracoke, formerly the residence of Blackbeard the pirate, is still a wonderful place— it is my favorite hideaway beach.” Some of the nation’s wilder beaches may be found here.

Big surf prevails in late summer, so families with children may wish to visit earlier in the year.
Fall is personally my favorite season to visit since there are less visitors and the water is still warm into late September

2. Caladesi Island State Park
Why Caladesi Island State Park in Florida’s Dunedin/Clearwater included: According to Leatherman, the crystalline quartz sand that makes up the white beach is plush and comfortable near the ocean.
The entrance has been blocked, so Caladesi is no longer a complete island, but it’s still a terrific hideaway, advises Leatherman. You may get there via pedestrian ferry boats, private boats, or a long walk north from Clearwater Beach.

3. Coopers Beach
Coopers Beach is situated on the south side of Long Island Southampton in New York, protected from the chilly Labrador currents in the lovely community of Southampton, according to Leatherman, which is why it made the list.
Coopers Beach has some of the greatest beach access in the Hamptons. A hint: According to Leatherman, this area has a snack bar that serves lunch and beverages.

4. St. George Island State Park
Why it made the list: “While St. George Island received a heavy hit in 2018 by Hurricane Michael, the region has largely rebounded, notably the sugary fine, white sand beach,” adds Leatherman. A hint: According to Leatherman, there is a lot to discover in this tranquil 2,023-acre park.

5. Duke Kahanamoku Beach
Why it was included: According to Leatherman,
Kahanamoku Beach is located on the west end of Waikiki Beach, away from the big crowds elsewhere

It is the widest beach on this internationally famous length of sand and sheltered by an offshore coral reef, making it a suitable beach for families with children

6. Lighthouse Beach
Why it was included: According to Leatherman, the original, spiral-striped Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was formerly located near Lighthouse Beach until being relocated inland in 1999 due to beach erosion.

7. Coronado Beach
Why it was included: According to Leatherman, Coronado Beach is well-known across Southern California and is a true refuge by the sea that is hundreds of yards wide.
A tip: According to Leatherman, the Hotel del Coronado, a landmark in the area, has hosted celebrities including monarchs, sheiks, and actors and actresses throughout the years.

8. Wailea Beach
Wailea beach was chosen because according to Leatherman,
The white coral sand beach gently slopes offshore and is wonderful for snorkelling when the water is calm
A piece of advice: According to Leatherman, “the upscale hotels are set back far from the beach, offering a beautiful-landscaped park, embellished with tropical flora and flowering shrubs and trees.”

9. Beachwalker Park Beach
Why it was included: According to Leatherman, “South of Charleston, Beachwalker Park is the public beach located on the southern end of Kiawah Island.” A hint: Leatherman notes that although the water is not crystal clear, it is clean and full of delicious fish for low-country cuisine.

10. Cape Cod Coast Guard Beach
Why it was chosen on the list: According to Leatherman, “the charming old Coast Guard station still remains above the glacial bluffs, affording for a superb view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and harbor.” A piece of advice: “Summertime beachgoers quickly cool down in the ocean since the water is frigid.
Great white sharks have been drawn to the frequented beaches since seals have recently relocated north from the Monomoy Island Wildlife Refuge, according to Leatherman.
