Top 10 Most Romantic Places in Germany

1. Monschau, North Rhine-Westphalia

Monschau is a peaceful small hillside village between the Belgian border and the Eifel National Park. The town’s major makeup is slate roofs and geometric lattice patterns of partly timbered dwellings, and a trip along Monschau’s paths and across its delicate bridges will provide you with its most desirable vistas.

While the sun sets, watch the River Roer flow beneath the red wooden footbridge for fleeting views of the calm and bucolic canvas that has won Monschau its reputation for romanticism.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the dimly illuminated Zum Haller for robust German meals and riverbank views.

2. Lüneburg, Lower Saxony

Lüneburg, a former salt-mining town, is today more recognized for its attractions above ground. The town’s rickety, jagged facade is the consequence of salt extraction from the ground, which caused the structures to lean and tilt sideways.

Lüneburg’s charm comes from its jumbled and mismatched appearance; gingerbread orange and farmhouse-red brick townhouses with Dutch gable roofs line the main cobbled shopping streets, all adorned with charcoal-colored lamp posts that light the way for views of the church spires silhouetted in the distance.

Climb Kalkberg (Chalk Mountain) for views of the town’s burnt orange rooftops, which seem perpetually autumnal and beautiful whatever the season. Head down the mountain to medieval Einzigartig at sunset.

Dinkelsbühl, located on Germany’s Romantic Road – and the old Roman path that swings through medieval villages in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg – has an inherently romantic air to it.

Cobbled lanes wind past old half-timbered buildings painted lemon, peach, and lime and repurposed into bakeries with stacks of cinnamon buns and fresh loaves awaiting pickup.

Quiet walks over the Old Bridge and gold-flecked lake at daybreak are one way to start the day, before ascending through town with soft buttery pretzels and coffee in hand to Heidelberg castle.

Views of the tumbledown ruins clothed in ivy will be provided here while looking in the other direction will provide a beautiful vista.
