Top 10 Most Romantic Places in London

1. St. Dunstan-in-the-East (St. Dunstan-in-the-East)

St Dunstan-in-the-East is a hidden jewel surrounded by the skyscrapers of the City of London.

Originally erected about 1100, the church was devastated following a World War II bombing assault, but instead of razing the remains, what remained – including a spire designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the legendary architect of neighboring St Paul’s – was accorded Grade I-listed status.

It was converted into a public garden in the early 1970s, replete with magnificent, careful planting in and around the gothic pillars and walls. It’s also said to be the setting of Ross and Emily’s London wedding in Friends, but given how poorly that went, perhaps it’s better not to bring it up.

2. The Regent’s Canal

Little Venice to Limehouse is a little over eight miles long, so a trek from one end of Regent’s Canal to the other is a completely feasible long-day pastime.

If you want to stay close to home and a long trip isn’t in the cards, we propose dropping into the meandering stretch of trail just near London Zoo, where – if you crane your neck and catch the angle just right – you can get a free glance at the wildlife.

One of the city’s most tranquil places, with boats serenely churning along the river.

3. The Primrose Hill

On Blurs’ ‘For Tomorrow,’ Damon Albarn of Primrose Hill sang, ‘It’s breezy there and the view’s so wonderful.’ On both counts, he was correct.

The lovely grassy hill guarding the townhouses of this hidden away village-like section of Camden affords one of the greatest views of the central London skyline, especially at night when the city lights shimmer and dazzle in the distance.

Albarn isn’t the only one who has paid homage to the site – near the peak, there’s a quotation from poet and painter William Blake that reads: ‘I have conversed with the spiritual sun.’ I noticed him on Primrose Hill.’

4. Columbia Boulevard

While the road is normally home to London’s famed flower market on Sundays, there’s something to be said for its charming Victorian cobbles when it’s vacant as well. A stroll along this charming time warp of a street will round off a walk-in adjacent to Haggerston Park, London Fields, or Victoria Park.

If you’re hungry, stop into the much-loved neighborhood eatery Brawn, which transformed itself into a deli during the lockdown, serving pre-prepared delicacies like cassoulet and braised-beef pie.

On weekends, scorching Nashville hot-chicken sandwiches are available to go if you can’t wait to get back home to heat and eat.

5. The South Bank

The South Bank is still a cultural center, with visitors and residents enjoying theatre, cinema, music, and more at the National Theatre, BFI, Royal Festival Hall, and Southbank Centre.

Alternatively, you might simply walk down the promenade between the Blackfriars and Westminster bridges to get up close and personal with the Thames, or bask in the riverside glow with a takeaway drink from one of the pop-up bars.

6. Nunhead Memorial Park

All of London’s Magnificent Seven – the stately set of big Victorian cemeteries erected when the room was limited in small churchyards – have their distinct allure, but sprawling Nunhead is possibly the most tranquil.

This cemetery, which is less popular than Highgate and Kensal Green, includes a hill that may be ascended for spectacular views of the city and trails that snake around ivy-wrapped monuments.

Keep a lookout for snowdrops poking through the grass in winter, as well as other early floral signs of spring, such as bluebells and daffodils.

7. The Albert Bridge

The Albert Bridge, which joins Chelsea on the north bank of the Thames with Battersea on the south, is one of London’s most stunning views.

It can be seen in Gwyneth Paltrow’s rom-com Sliding Doors and has even been immortalized in song, the Pogues’ ‘Misty Morning, Albert Bridge,’ a sweeping ballad about returning to the arms of a city-dwelling lover.

8. Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury, long an inspiration for creative minds, has traditionally balanced scholarly and lyrical interests. A stroll through Bloomsbury’s beautifully set out squares and fairy tale streets, where writers such as Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens once resided, is always full of energy.

Visit the brutalist Brunswick Centre before embarking on a blue plaque-detecting quest, followed by the most romantic street snack we can think of — a shared bag of fish and chips dripping with salt and vinegar from London’s best chippie, the Fryer’s Delight.

9. Greenwich

The riverfront royal borough of Greenwich, another region of London that appears remarkably unaffected by time, provides a variety of outdoor delights.

Stroll up the hill in Greenwich Park to reach the Observatory and stand on either side of the meridian line, admire the 19th-century tea clipper Cutty Sarkor, and stroll around the beautiful grounds of the Old Royal Naval College – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that you may recognize from the films Four Weddings and a Funeral and Les Misérables.

The view of the magnificent structures on the opposite side of the river is spectacular, accessible via the rather eerie Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

10. Pergola in Hampstead

What was once Hampstead Heath’s best-kept secret has become a popular hangout for everyone in a nearby radius looking to capture wisteria boughs. But nothing can take away the allure of the pergola, a garden fit for a country estate, and a popular location for marriage proposals and weddings.

Don’t worry if you’re not planning on proposing — it’s not a need to visit this gorgeous Georgian Arbor and terrace, as well as the verdant Hill Garden, the erstwhile exclusive grounds of a long-demolished manor home.
