What day is Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine or Saint Valentine’s Day. This day is celebrated on the 14th of February. The day originated as a Christian feast day.

It was to honour early Christian martyrs known as Saint Valentine. As the years passed and traditions developed, this day has become a significant religious and cultural celebration.

History Of Valentine’s Day

Early Christian martyrs were known as Valentines but on the 14th the honoured valentines were Valentine of Terni and Valentine of Rome. Priest of Rome was martyrs in 269.

He was added by saints by Pope Gelasius. Valentine of Terni was the bishop of Interamna. He was martyred during the reign of Emperor Aurelian. Both martyrs were buried at different locations.

14th February is celebrated in various Christian denominations as St Valentine’s Day. It is noted as the rank of “commemoration” in the calendar of saints in Anglican Communion.

In the calendar of saints of the Lutheran Church is the feast day of Saint Valentine. The feast day of Valentine’s Day was registered on 14th February in the General Roman Calendar but later was removed.

Then later it was relegated to particular calendars for the following reason. “Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14.”

In Balzan (Malta) the feast day is still celebrated throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics. In this place, relics of saints are claimed to be found. They follow the older pre – second Vatican Council calendar. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, St Valentine is celebrated on the 6th of July.

During this day Saint Valentine, the Roman presbyter is honoured. During Eastern Orthodox Church, on 39th July observe the feast of Hieromartyr Valentine who is Bishop of Interamna.

Story Of Valentine’s Day
