What is Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi Festival

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi festival is celebrated on the day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar month of Karthik. Teras or Trayodashi refers to the thirteenth day of the waning moon phase, and Dhan refers to wealth.

Hence it is called Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. On this day Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber and Lord Yama are worshipped. On Dhanteras/Dhantrayodashi puja/worship invites luck and prosperity.

Lord Dhanvantari is the God of Health, while Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are gods of wealth, and Lord Yama is the God of Death. This is the first day of Deepawali or Diwali, festival of lights, which is a five-day festival celebrated in India by all the Hindus.

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi Festival History, Significance, Customs and Traditions

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi festival has many stories which have come through oral history. It has various incidences and references for the celebration of each god. Here are very interesting mythological stories behind the worship/puja of both goddesses.

On this day Lord Dhanvantari who is considered to be Vaidya or Doctor of Gods or God of Health emerged from Samudra Manthan. Samudra Manthan was a fight between gods and demons to churn out the nectar or Amrit from the sea.

Lord Dhanvantari emerged with a Kalasha filled with Amrit or nectar in one hand and a book of Ayurveda in another hand. This gave the way of Ayurveda to treat illness and maintain health. Hence this day of Dhanteras is celebrated as Jayanti or the birthday of Lord Dhanteras.

There is another story for the celebration of Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi festival. Once upon a time, there lived a King named Hima. He had a son who was predicted to be dead due to a snake bite when he entered his sixteenth year on this planet.

He got to know about a girl who has a lucky horoscope and wades off any misfortune. To avoid misfortune, King Hima decides to marry this girl to his son so that his death can be waded off.

On the predicted day of this incident, the girl chalked a clever plan to overcome her husband’s death. She put all her jewelry, silver coins, silver, and golden articles, and all valuables at the entrance of the main door. Then she oils lamps in the whole house. All the gold and silver articles and jewelry were glittering in the brightness of oil lamps.

She didn’t let her husband sleep, nor did she sleep the whole night. She sang beautiful songs the whole night. The girl also told various stories to her husband. Yama, the God of Death, came to take her husband’s life in the form of a snake.

\The eyes of the snake were filled with all the glitter due to the lamp and the gold and silver ornaments and articles which had been kept in the entrance. The snake could not see anything due to the glitter.

Meanwhile, the snake also heard alluring songs that the girl was singing for her husband. So, the snake sat on the heap of jewelry and articles and listened to the alluring songs for the whole night.

The next morning the snake left as the time to take the life of the son had lapsed. Hence Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped on this day of Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. It is believed that Dhanteras/Dhantrayodashi puja/worship invites luck and prosperity.

Pooja Rituals, Customs, and Traditions for Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi Festival

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi festival Pooja is performed in the evening during Pradosh Kaal. Pradosh Kaal is generally two hours after sunset. Before this day, the whole house is cleaned and whitewashed.

Big lanterns are placed in the window or at the main entrance. Beautiful rangoli motifs are drawn at the entrance. Some people draw small feet indicating Goddess Lakshmi, who is long-awaited, all over the house.

Goddess Laxmi, Lord Kuber, and Lord Dhanvantari are placed in the north direction. A ghee lamp is lit in front of each god. Lord Kuber is given a white Prasad of sanctified food and Lord Dhanvantari is yellow colors sweet Prasad or sanctified food. Yama Deep made.

It is done by putting a swastika on a table, lighting an oil lamp, and offering flowers and coins. Then the lamp is placed outside the main door on the right and the flame faces southward.

Unveiling Common Beliefs with Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi Festival

This day is considered being very auspicious to buy new gold or silver articles. Many people believe that it is auspicious to start a new business venture.

The business community believes that Dhanteras/Dhantrayodashi puja/worship invites luck and prosperity. Business communities buy new billbooks, while some communities buy electronic appliances.

It is also believed that buying stationery and placing them in the west direction is auspicious. Some people buy 11 Gomti chakras, wrap them in yellow cloth, and keep the bundle in a safety locker to invite luck.

Many people suggest a list of items not to be done on this day. Such as payment of old bills or loan repayment is not considered being auspicious.

Buying any steel or iron items or any sharp object is not considered lucky. Even giving or taking loans is not considered auspicious. People even say if one wants to buy a car on this day, the payment should not be done on Dhanteras.

It is also said that the lamp placed outside the main door is to worship Yama or lord of death to take away any bad luck. It is believed that Dhanteras/Dhantrayodashi puja/worship invites luck and prosperity.

What Special Food Items Prepared on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi Festival

Festivals are associated with special food items. Many people make pure ghee boondi laddus. Some also believe that rice kheer made with jaggery is auspicious.

In several parts of the country, people believe that “Lapsi” is made from long-grain such as wheat sautéed in ghee and sugar.

Some people prepared Panchamrit to be given after Pooja. Panchamrit is made from honey, milk, ghee, curd and sugar.

In some parts of India, especially the northern and eastern parts, people make wheat flour or aatte ka halwa. This is prepared from wheat flour, ghee, sugar, and milk.
