What is the New York Times Spelling Bee Contest: New York Times Spelling Bee of Spelling Bee is a word game published in electronic and print media format by The New York Times.
The game was created by Frank Longo. The game was introduced in 2014 every week. On 9th May 2018, it was launched with a digital daily version which has an altered scoring system.

About the New York Times Spelling Bee Contest
The game has a 7-space honeycomb structure. Each space has one letter. The player needs to form a four or more-letter word. Each word must include the letter in the centre. Each word can use the letter more than once. Each puzzle will have one pangram and give the player the highest points.
If all the words in the puzzle are found by the player, then the player is entitled “Queen Bee”. Will Shortz had put forth a proposal for a word game as he was inspired by Polygon from The Times? Based on the proposal, Frank Longo developed the Spelling Beed game.
The game was launched in the print media in 2014 while the game was launched in the digital media on 9th May 2018. Robert Vinluan designed the cartoon bee mascot “Beatrice” for the digital version.
Sam Ezersky has maintained the daily puzzle since August 2021. The puzzle goes live every day at 3:00 am as per Eastern Time.

- The winning word that year was “Gladiolus”.

- Frank Neuhauser was the first official champion of the Spelling Bee.

The first appearance of a spelling bee was in 1875. The contest has come from America. The spelling bee comes from the Middle English word bene which means prayer or favour.
In England, the dialect form of the word is “been” which refers to voluntary help given by neighbours. By 1700, the bee was used to describe a group gathering to accomplish a task word.
So, as it turns out a spelling bee is just one of the endless different types of ‘bees’ you can plan. All that matters is that you and your students are coming together to achieve something.

How Do You Play Spell Bee
The Spelling Bee is a word competition. In this competition, contestants need to spell words from a broad selection of words. These words are from varying degrees of difficulty. The contestants need to memorize the words as indicated in the dictionaries and recite them.
This concept seems to have originated in the United States. These kinds of contests are now held in various countries around the world.

- BINGO — All seven letters in the puzzle are used to start at least one word in the word list.
- 2LL — Two Letter List: The number of accepted words that begin with the indicated two letters.
- Pangram — A word that uses all seven letters at least once. Some puzzles will have more than one pangram. A pangram is worth seven extra points.
- Perfect Pangram — A pangram that uses each letter only once, e.g., a seven-letter pangram.
- GN4L — Genius, No 4 Letters: You’ve reached Genius level without any four-letter words. Though we may want to say four-letter words while trying to get to Genius without them.
- GN4L OTN — Genius, No 4 Letters, On The Nose: You’ve scored exactly the number of points to achieve Genius without using four-letter words.
- GNP(s) — Genius, No Pangram(s): You’ve gotten to Genius without finding a pangram.
- Hivemind — The name of the Spelling Bee community.
- QB — Queen Bee, the highest score possible in each puzzle, and an Easter egg level in the game. You’ve found all the possible words in the puzzle.
- QBABM — Queen Bee All: You’ve gotten to Queen Bee without any hints from the Hivemind.
- QBWG+H+2LL — Queen Bee with Grid (plus hints): You’ve got to Queen Bee with the use of hints, the two-letter list, or the grid, which appears in each Spelling Bee column.

How To Play Spelling Bee New York Times
The digital version of the spelling bee is easy and has certain rules to play. The steps to play the game are as below.
- The seven letters are placed in a honeycombed structure.
- Each word must include the centre letter.
- Each word must be at least four letters or more.
- Each letter can be used more than once.
- The words in the contest do not include words that are offensive, proper nouns obscure, or hyphenated.
- Each four-letter words attract one point.
- The longer words earn more points.
- A six-lettered word attracts six points.
- Each puzzle has a pangram. This gives an additional seven points.
