1. Phillips Exeter Academy
For decades, this New Hampshire institution, more generally known as Exeter, has served as the unofficial feeder for Harvard, teaching boys and girls in grades 9-12. (post-graduate year available). In classic Exeter fashion, students select from over 450 courses in 19 topic areas: The Harkness approach is a plan that promotes dialogue-based learning.
The unique math curriculum emphasizes problem sets and seminar-based learning, abandoning standard textbooks in favor of student-owned learning procedures. More than 80% of the faculty members have graduate degrees.

2. Phillips Academy (Andover)
Phillips Academy, located in Andover, Massachusetts, was founded in 1778 and is the country’s oldest incorporated residential school. Andover (as it is often called) is historically significant for being an original feeder school for Yale. It was also the first private secondary school to use a need-blind admission policy. Grants enable Andover to provide 100 percent of a family’s verified financial need.
Andover’s faculty, like that of its archival Exeter, is made of 80 percent advanced degree holders. 3. Putney High School

Instead of having physical education lessons, St. Paul’s forces all of its pupils to participate in sports.

7. Asheville High School
The Asheville School, a private coeducational boarding school for students in grades 9-12, is located in the mountain city of Asheville, North Carolina. Students here are taught to push themselves intellectually and personally.
The natural location encourages mountaineering: all first-year students participate in a three-day wilderness camping excursion that includes a high-ropes course. They also attend a series of sessions geared to familiarise them with Asheville School.

Through the four-year sequence of the Integrated Humanities curriculum, academics reflect the rigour of the outdoor adventure. Seniors must also complete a Senior Demonstration, which entails writing a series of papers on a chosen topic and defending the topic in front of a faculty panel.
Seniors also deliver “Chapel Talks,” in which they make oral speeches in front of the whole school community on personal and meaningful thoughts or experiences. The usual boarding school community service requirement differs at Asheville in that students perform 40 hours of service for one organisation and write an essay on their experience to the headmaster.
Students attend Bates, Boston College, Davidson, Furman, University of Richmond, and West Point in addition to the Ivies.

8. Shattuck-St. Mary’s Elementary School
Shattuck-St. Mary’s, founded in 1858, is an independent coeducational residential school in Faribault, Minnesota, that educates students in grades 6-12. A post-graduate year is also available at the institution. SSM offers their pupils a unique combination of tradition and innovation.
The school retains its historic Episcopal character by holding weekly chapel services, religion classes, and saying grace before meals. Students must also complete a community service obligation in order to graduate. Shattuck-St. Mary’s provides unique multi-year, immersive programmes through its Centres of Excellence in bioscience, engineering, several sports (particularly ice hockey), or a self-designed major.
SSM also offers a one-of-a-kind pre-conservatory programme for students interested in attending one of the country’s premier music institutions. Students obtain admission to top-tier schools and institutions, with Penn State, Boston University, the University of Washington, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison having the greatest enrolments.

9. St. Andrew’s College
If you’ve watched Dead Poets Society, you’ve seen the St. Andrew’s campus in Middletown, Delaware—the film was shot nearly entirely on school grounds. St. Andrew’s is an all-boarding, coed private school for students in grades 9-12 that is dedicated to its Episcopalian heritage.
Along with the all-boarding requirement, family-style dinners during the week (in which students take turns serving tables) contribute to the campus’s close-knit community. St. Andrew’s forces students to perform tasks (which are often performed in the student’s room and rotate on a regular basis).

Academics are tough, and graduates attend Ivy League and other top-tier universities such as NYU and Vanderbilt. Seniors participate in reading and writing intensive spring tutorials, in which three students meet in a course devised expressly by faculty members from a variety of disciplines in the spirit of the Oxford tutorial approach, and then defend an original thesis to the English Department.
St. Andrew’s, true to its past, has a Pipes & Drums group that allows students to train and perform bagpipes or field drumming and requires attendance at chapels and Sunday services. Finally, the school can satisfy 100 percent of students’ verified financial need.

10. Thacher College
The Thacher School in Ojai, California, was founded in 1889 and is the state’s oldest coed residential school. With Formal Dinners, four evenings a week and seven-day camping excursions each semester, over 90% of students live on campus, which naturally lends to a strong campus community.
Freshmen not only share a room their first year at Thacher, but they also learn the importance of plain old-fashioned hard work via the required Horse Program, where they learn the fundamentals of horsemanship (both caretaking and riding).
Students get a greater sense of self-esteem, problem-solving abilities, and responsibility as a result of this curriculum. During the year, students also go on at least one overnight horseback riding expedition.
