The Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method is a formula that is specially designed to calculate the target score for the batting team.
Secondly, it is used when the match gets interrupted by rain or any other circumstances.
The two Englishmen introduced this method, and it was derived from their names. Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis and was known as Duckworth Lewis Stern Method (DLS).
It was initially introduced in the year 1997 and was adopted by ICC in the year 1999.
After both the Englishmen got retired Steve Stern took charge and became curator of this method and then it got renamed along with Steve Stern in November 2014- the DUCKWORTH-LEWIS-STERN method.
When this situation comes to setting a fair target for the second batting team, it should be done very wisely.
It is not like only reducing the target that is why the DLS method is used to set a fair run target for the second batting team based on the same difficulty level.

Along these lines excusing batsmen is a route for the handling side to control the runs scored in an inning and forestall the batting side from either accomplishing their objective score or posting a huge complete for the handling side to follow in the following innings.
The main benefit is that we get the proper results, points, and rankings because if the match doesn’t happen. It cannot make the proper decision.

Duckworth Lewis Stern Older Methods
Earlier, when the DLS was not introduced, there was AVERAGE RUN RATE (ARR) method was used. When the ODIs were played for the first time, this method was used to make a fair decision.
This method only has the average run rate system to decide the run target for the second batting team and also didn’t have the wickets limitations.
So, if the first batting team gives the target of 300 runs in 50 overs with an average of 6 and if the target for the second batting team is reduced to 30 overs.

Then the target would be 180 and after further playing rain interrupts the second team was on 120 for 9 in 20 over, then finally the second team will be declared as the winner.
So, this ARR method stood biased for the second batting team. That is why this method was demolished by ICC.
Its imperfections were broadly featured during the 1992 World Cup elimination round between Britain and South Africa. Pursuing Britain’s 252, South Africa was 231 for six and required 22 off 13 balls when downpour halted play for 12 minutes.

Two overs were lost thus the two least scoring over — yielding one disagreement absolute — in the Britain innings were struck off.
This implied the objective was decreased uniquely by one, and South Africa had 21 hurries to score off one ball (the scoreboard erroneously flashed 22 that day).
This ridiculous end to the game provoked the quest for a superior technique.

Alternative to Duckworth Lewis Stern Method
Many people came up with their new rules and reported that the DLS is not worthy. V. Jayadevan from Kerala came up with his new method- the VJD method.
There were many controversies on DLS and VJD methods. But ICC never approved his method. DLS methods both for T20s and ODIs are the same.
In the 50-over match, if the DLS method is applied, each team must face a minimum of 20 over for the outcome to be valid and if we talk about 20 over the match, each team must face a minimum of 5 over.
These are the basic criteria that need to be followed. Rest there are umpires and other officials who take care of all the rules and regulations.
