Lord Rama is the son of King Dasharatha and Mata Kausalya. He had three younger brothers, namely Bharat, Lakshman, and Shatrughan. One day Maharshi Vishwamitra took Lord Rama to swayamvar of Sita.

He fulfilled his task and married Sita. Soon the other brother was also married. Lakshman was married to Urmila, Bharat was married to Mandavi and Shatrughan was married to Shrutakirti.

After the marriages of all sons, Kind Dhashratha thought he would hand over the kingdom of Ayodhya to Lord Rama. But this was not acceptable to Manthara. She started poisoning Kaikaiye’s mind.

Kaikaiy in turn asked Kind Dasharatha to end Lord Rama’s exile for fourteen years with his wife. Lord Rama agreed to go, and he was accompanied by his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman.

So, Bharat put khadau, or footwear of Lord Rama on the throne and managed all the liabilities of the kingdom.

On the other hand, Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshman faced various difficulties in the jungle. Shurpanakha proposed to Lord Rama and Lakshman for marriage. But they refused flatly.

So, she attacked Sita and in defense, Lakshman cut Shurpanakha’s nose and ears. Shurpanakha’s brothers Khara and Dushan attacked Lord Rama and Lakshman to take revenge on their sister.
